Metamorphosis


A few years ago my children and I studied various bugs that we could find in our yard. I hoped this would help them get over their fears of bugs. I’m not sure it helped all that much, but for the past couple of summers, my kids and I have been capturing caterpillars and “raising” them to butterfly stage. It is a fun activity that gets us outdoors and exploring the nature around us.

Last year I had planted some herbs that I had read were host plants to swallowtail butterflies. By the end of the summer we raised a generation of black swallowtail butterflies. I am hoping we can do that again in a few weeks. (I spotted a swallowtail in the garden a few days ago.)

So far this year we have been raising and releasing cabbage white butterflies. With social distancing and events being cancelled this summer, I tried planting a little container garden in my backyard, but I have not been very successful at growing food. The broccoli bolted and the cauliflower did not produce, so I decided we should see what kind of caterpillars we had by raising them to butterfly or moth stage.

I started by transplanting a broccoli plant to a smaller pot that would fit in our netted butterfly habitat. Having a living host plant in the habitat works better and is easier to maintain than constantly clipping and providing plant leaves. All the caterpillars on the broccoli plant were green, so I wasn’t sure what they were. We had a few moths and one butterfly from the first grouping.

Now that I know which ones turn into the cabbage butterfly, I add them to the butterfly habitat. I throw the moth caterpillars out for the birds. Every few days I go out and pick the caterpillars off of the rest of the garden plants. We raised a handful of cabbage butterflies on the single broccoli plant until there was nothing left.

After we let the last one go, I asked my daughter if we were done with the cabbage white or if she wanted to raise a few more. She said she wanted to raise a few more. Now we have one of the cauliflower plants in our butterfly habitat. We are waiting for their transformation to be complete, so we can release them.

 I think the change a caterpillar undergoes during metamorphosis is truly fascinating and awesome. This is just one of the ways I see God’s intricate design in nature and a parallel to our faith.

We are like the caterpillar and the butterfly when we accept Jesus as our Savior.

 

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

Alfredo Sauce


Last night I made roasted chicken over egg noodles with Alfredo sauce. I flavored the chicken with a generous amount of salt and some Italian seasonings. The egg noodle recipe came from www.meatrx.com under the recipes tab. The Alfredo sauce was something I threw together, and it turned out well. The recipe is below.

Ingredients:

1 stick (1/2 cup) butter

4 oz cream cheese

4 oz parmesan cheese (I shredded the cheese to help it melt faster.)

1 cup cream

½ cup chicken broth/chicken drippings

½ tsp garlic

¼ tsp parsley

¼ tsp thyme

 

Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan.

Cook on low to medium heat until the butter and cheeses are melted and all ingredients are well combined.

Stir sauce while cooking to keep from scorching/burning the sauce on the bottom of the pan.

 

Liver Tumor Progress Note

Please know that the following is not medical advice. I am just explaining my experience on the keto/carnivore diet. I want to share my cancer and keto journey with others, so that people can start asking their doctors questions and really think about nutrition and a healthy lifestyle in a “new” way.

In January 2019 I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer to the liver. I did conventional chemotherapy and had an ablation of the tumor in the spring of 2019. Following the ablation I changed doctors and started on Ibrance and Femara. I am giving all these details because I want to be transparent about the treatments I have done. I don’t want anyone to assume I did this through diet alone. However, I do think it has been the biggest help.

All through last year I explored low carb/keto diets and cancer. I learned about the Otto Warburg effect. I learned about ketosis. I learned about inflammation and insulin resistance. I learned about metabolic health. I learned about mitochondrial health. This whole path I have been on for the past year and a half has really changed how I think about health and wellness.

I had a baseline CT in October 2019 with my newer (to me) oncologist. It showed the liver tumor measured at 1.6 x 1.0 cm. It’s not a huge tumor, but any cancer tumor is scary to have because you never know if/when it will spiral out of control. At this point in time I continued to take the medications as prescribed. There was a lot of dosage adjustments and time off of the medication here and there because it tanked my blood counts too low. Finally the doctor got me down to the lowest dose possible of the Ibrance.

My next CT scan was in January 2020. This time the liver tumor measured 0.9 x 1.3 cm. It was a slight decrease but an improvement none the less. The doctor was pleased with the results.

A couple of months after the January scan COVID hit the globe. The recommended guidelines for the Ibrance changed and now even the lowest dose was causing my blood counts to be too low. During the early spring I was told to hold the Ibrance longer than the scheduled week off. I ended up holding the Ibrance for about a month the first time and then for about three weeks the second time. My routine scan for the end of April also got pushed back to the beginning/middle of June.

Last week I finally had my routine CT scan. This scan showed that my liver tumor was now measuring at 1 x 0.7 cm. My oncologist was, again, happy with the results but also a little more cautious about indicating it was a true positive improvement. My husband and I were so happy and relieved by the results.

With the ongoing pandemic and the fact that I had improvement, even though I didn’t take the Ibrance as often as recommended, we have decided that I am going to hold off on taking that medication for now. The doctor is ok with this for now, but I have to be followed more closely than every three months. I decided this was a good compromise because I would no longer be on a medication that I had serious questions and concerns about.

I continue to read and listen to new information and testimonials about the keto/carnivore diet. I have also expanded my health practices and learning to sunlight exposure, grounding, prayer, exercise, and eliminating as many toxins from my environment as I can. One of the toxins I have learned about recently is estrogen (or estrogen-like substance) exposure. This is another area of importance to me because my cancer is hormonal driven.

So now, I pose to you, why wait? Why wait until you are sick to change bad nutrition and bad habits?

Don’t be like me. Don’t wait until your life is on the line to really think about what you expose your body to and how you treat it.

Chemo Hair Keto

I have not had a hair cut in over three years.

During the summer of 2016 I had my long hair cut to shoulder length. As the summer progressed and more information was discovered about my cancer diagnosis, staging and treatment plan, I decided to have my hair cut very short in September. I had always wanted to know what I would look like with short hair…and now I know.

It was not pretty.

I started chemotherapy at the end of September 2016, and after about three or four weeks of weekly treatments my hair began to fall out more and more. It was thinning and balding in places, so my husband and I decided it was time to shave my head.

 I am thankful my identity wasn’t really wrapped up in my looks. I was never really into beauty products nor hair products. I didn’t know how to do fancy hairstyles; it was up in a “ponytail” most of the time.  However, it was still traumatizing to have my hair falling out in handfuls when I would wash it in the shower. It was sad and fascinating at the same time. I did cry about it a few times, but I did not allow myself to dwell on it too long. I would remind myself that it was only temporary.

Flash forward to 2019 and I receive a metastatic disease diagnosis. The treatment plan suggested was more chemotherapy followed by a hormone blocker. We decided to follow the standard of care again, and I would endure four rounds of a different chemotherapy drug. It was another one known to cause hair loss.

This time I decided not to cut my hair short because I knew that it was not a good look for me. My hair was finally long enough that it looked good again.

 Throughout treatment my hair continued to thin but it did not fall out like the first time. My husband would continue to provide encouragement that my hair was not bad enough to warrant a short haircut or shaving. It was just a bit thinner than before.

So, why was my hair reacting differently?

I think it was due to the fact that we had adopted a low carbohydrate, whole food diet. We stopped eating processed “foods” and began to really research nutrition.  This change goes back to my brother and sister-in-law introducing us to the ketogenic concept that I talked about in my previous post. I also, inadvertently, ended up fasting a day or two after treatment due to severe nausea and vomiting that had to be controlled with potent anti-nausea medications. I did not know at the time that there was information out there about the protective effects of fasting during chemotherapy.

One might argue that the difference was in the chemotherapy drugs that I received. He or she might be right. However, this last chemotherapy caused more nausea, vomiting, electrolyte wasting, neuropathy, tinnitus, and taste changes than the first set of drugs ever “thought” to cause. I was only supposed to be in the clinic every three weeks for treatment, but I would end up back in the clinic a few days after treatment for magnesium and potassium infusions because the levels were too low.

Now, as some would say, here’s “the rub.” If the ketogenic lifestyle and/or fasting can have a protective effect during chemotherapy, why isn’t anyone talking about it? Why is it only now starting to see a little bit of light in the media? The research and information have been out there for a while now.

The ketogenic nutritional, dietary advice was not given to me by any of the medical professionals taking care of me. It was all information that I had to find and search out on my own.

God Provides the Healing

Last week I chose health and healing as the words of the week on my Facebook page. I always thought I was fairly healthy. I followed a typical western diet and tried to exercise when I could fit it into my schedule. I have never smoked and never really drank much alcohol. I am also still fairly young.

I didn’t buy into the organic foods for quite a while. I couldn’t see that it made any difference in my friends’ lives, and organic produce can be pretty expensive. (I would later change my mind on the organic front after doing more nutritional research.)

My world was rocked in 2016 with my first breast cancer diagnosis. Serious health diagnoses can be scary, especially for a young mother. I got through the treatment stages and still didn’t change my eating habits. I had no idea. Nutrition was never really brought up during treatment. The medical staff were only concerned that I kept my appetite and didn’t lose weight.

One thing I did change nutritionally during this time was that I stopped drinking as much soda. Some brands would make my stomach hurt, so I just couldn’t drink them anymore due to the pain and discomfort; not so much from any nutritional viewpoint. (Yes, I knew soda was not good for me, but I hadn’t really thought about how toxic it really was for my body.)

My world was turned upside down when I received the metastatic diagnosis in 2019. Around this time, one of my brothers and his wife introduced me to the ketogenic diet. They had been low carb, ketogenic, for a couple of months and we had some conversations about it over the holidays. My husband and I started counting our carbohydrates and limiting them a few weeks before I heard the words metastatic cancer.

It didn’t take me very long to start researching and going down the “rabbit hole” to find the proper human diet. The more I looked, the more lies and misinformation I found. This can be very upsetting for people who, like me, have a chronic (or multiple) illness. I don’t know the number of times I cried when I learned the truth.

I am only a little over a year out from my metastatic diagnosis and conventional treatment. It’s still too early to tell if I have helped improve my prognosis. However, I don’t dwell on thoughts like this very often nor for very long.

I look back and see God’s providence intertwined in my life. I believe the low carb, ketogenic diets were introduced to me as tools for me to use to aid in the healing of my body.

Back in February I explained it to a friend by comparing it to 1 Corinthians 3:6-9:

“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.”

My brother and sister-in-law were like Paul because they introduced, or “planted,” the idea of the ketogenic diet and nutrition in my mind.

I am like Apollos as I “water” my health, my life, by following a meat heavy ketogenic lifestyle and continue to research ways to optimize my health.

Only God can provide the healing.

I feel well, I am hopeful, and I know it is all in God’s hands. He is in control and can see all things and how it will work out in the end. He is mighty, faithful, just, merciful and gracious.

I will continue to share my testimony and go where He sends me.

Carnivore Breakfast Pizza


The kids and I made our own breakfast pizza last week and it was delicious!

Ingredients:

  1.  1 pound bacon
  2. keto/low carb country gravy
  3. dozen eggs
  4. salt, pepper, and seasonings to taste
  5. sprinkling of cheese

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Weave the bacon to make the crust and bake for 30 minutes.
  3. Make country gravy for sauce.
  4. Season and scramble the eggs in a skillet.
  5. Shred cheese.
  6. Spread gravy of bacon crust, add scrambled eggs and cheese.

We split this pizza between four people, but I will leave the serving size up to you. 

Country Gravy Sauce:

Add a couple tablespoons of bacon grease to a skillet. Add and melt two ounces of cream cheese. Add 2/3 cup heavy cream and whisk until bubbly. Have water nearby for thinning. (We added 1/4 cup of water to thin the gravy just a little.) Season with salt and pepper to taste.

 

Holy Week

I took the past week off, so my children and I could really focus on Jesus for Holy Week. When I was growing up, my family didn’t celebrate Holy Week, and I didn’t even know what it was until a couple of years ago. I knew that I wanted to do more with my kids than just celebrate on the day of Easter.

Holy Week starts on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter or Resurrection Sunday. It is celebrated by many Christians around the world, so each day we did an activity or had a treat that would have us exploring Jesus’s last days before He was crucified.

Palm Sunday

We made palm branches by tracing hands on green construction paper and pasting them to popsicle sticks.

We watched Sunday service online, as well as a couple of Palm Sunday cartoons on Right Now Media.

We started a Resurrection garden. (This was our first year putting one together.)

We ended the day with a Palm Sundae. (Please don’t mind the melted ice cream; it was fresh out of the churn and it took a minute to get everyone’s scooped out and take a picture.)

Holy Monday

We continued through our Resurrection garden activities and discussed how Jesus taught His followers.

That evening we had sweet, soft pretzels for our treat to teach us how we should pray. (I forgot to take a picture before taking a bite of my pretzel.)

Holy Tuesday

Tuesday evening we had donuts to remind us: “Donut forget to pray!”

Spy Wednesday

We discussed Judas’s betrayal of Jesus for 30 silver coins.

We ate the rest of the left over donuts for the evening’s dessert.

The grass started to sprout in our Resurrection garden.

 

Maundy Thursday

We continued the discussion of Judas and watched an episode from Super Book about the Last Supper and Jesus praying in Gethsemane.

During some of our Advent activities during the Christmas season, I stumbled upon the idea of a shepherd’s meal; so we had a shepherd’s meal and Communion in the evening. (Jesus is the Good Shepherd!)

We watched a broadcast on zoom from the Jews for Jesus organization, which was very interesting and informative.

I gave the kids little “money” (treat) bags of chocolate for dessert, as a reminder of the 30 silver Judas received for his betrayal.

 

Good Friday

We continued with Resurrection garden activities and studying the Bible to learn how and why Jesus took on our sins so that we may live.

Black Saturday

The weather was so nice here that we spent a good chunk of the day outside. We went ahead and had our Easter egg hunt. (Yes we do some of the more secular traditions too.)

That evening, the hubs and I watched the Passion of the Christ (after the kids had gone to bed of course). I hadn’t seen it since I was a young teenager, and I was surprised to learn that my husband had not seen it at all. Now that I am a mom, the scenes with Mary, Jesus’s mother, just broke my heart so much. The whole thing is heart wrenching, but I don’t remember the movie having the same effect on me when I was younger, the way it does now.

 

Resurrection Sunday

He is risen! We enjoyed Sunday morning service from the comfort of our home. We also watched the last of the Easter series cartoons and just had a slow, relaxing day.

That evening we watched Sight and Sound’s production of Jesus on TBN. It’s not the same as seeing a show live, but it was still good and the kids were able to watch too.

Looking for Hope


“God shall be my hope, my stay, my guide and lantern to my feet.”

The beginning signs of spring are coming to life all around us. The early flowers are so beautiful; the trees are beginning to bud and awaken as well. I saw the first butterfly of the season a few days ago. These are a sign that the cold, winter season is leaving and bringing hope of the warm seasons to come. 

Did you know that the Bible mentions the word hope roughly 130 times (depending on the translation)?

I know people have great fear right now and are worried about their futures. I know people are looking to their leaders and those in authority for answers and direction. This can be a good and wise thing, but we shouldn’t forget they, too, are human and capable of mistakes.

In my recent, personal, “dark valleys,” I have turned towards God for my hope. The Spirit given to me led the way in my pursuit for peace, calm and hope, while my world fell apart. This is where I really started to take the Bible seriously and seek the One who created me and saved me.

I wasn’t sure where to take this blog, so I am letting my Bible study lead the way. This week I picked back up in Psalm because I have finished my recent study of the book of Romans. There really is no better time to study the book of Psalm than right now; the psalms are full of hope during some of King David’s darkest moments.

This week I spent a few days really reading and studying Psalm 23.  This psalm is often associated with funerals and death, but if you really dive into it, it shows life and hope.

Psalm 23

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

God is enough!

 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.

When things get out of control and we start to lose our way, He is there to lead. We only need to look to Him for direction.

4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

                God is in control! Even when we think all may be lost.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

                God is faithful!

 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

                He is our hope!

Billy Graham put it this way, “Christ wants to give you hope for the future. He wants you to learn what it means to walk with Him every day. When you come to Christ, God gives you eternal life – which begins right now as you open your heart to Him.”

So take some time each day and seek Jesus and lean on Him during this time of hardship!

John10:11-15

So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Renewing the Mind

(Just a note: Honestly enough, I had hard time focusing my thoughts for this entry. There were so many directions I could have gone in (and wanted to go in), and I had a hard time limiting them. I hope this entry makes sense and brings someone a little encouragement today.)

We have been told to quarantine, social distance, self-isolate, etc. for our own health and for the health of other people around us. We are in the middle of a worldwide pandemic caused by COVID 19.

There is no time like the present to take hold of your health.

I have been pursuing health improvement and optimization since last year around the time I received my metastatic diagnosis. It has been quite a journey and I have learned quite a bit. There are so many different things that contribute either positively or negatively to our health. Today I want to focus a little bit on mental/spiritual health.

I have been studying in Romans for the past month or so and I want to point out Romans 12:2:

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

What is feeding your mind or soul?

The world?

Or God?

Because what we think matters!

Prayer, reading of Scripture, being thankful, and having community with the Church are some of the ways I renew my mind and remind myself of God’s presence. I typically start my day with a Bible devotion or study and prayer to help my mind focus. When I don’t do this my whole day is off and I can tell that I have not spent enough time seeking God. If I don’t fill my “heart” with God’s Word, then the things of this world have an easier time creeping in and causing chaos.

To those feeling isolated:

  • I pray we remember you are never alone. God is always with us.
  • Let’s take this time as an opportunity to slow down and focus on what is most important to us and set our minds on the things of above.
  • Please remember we are doing something important by staying home, even if it doesn’t feel or seem that way.
  • We are protecting ourselves from the virus if we don’t have it.
  • More importantly, we are protecting others by not spreading the virus if we have it knowingly or unknowingly.

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:1-2

To those in the healthcare field and others who continue to work:

  • I pray for God’s protection over you.
  • I am thankful you continue to work and serve your communities in such uncertain times.
  • I hope you find the time to renew your minds and prepare yourselves for battle each day.

“He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.” Psalm 112:7

To the Church:

  • I pray we continue to reach out and serve our communities with each and every opportunity we are given (through a screen or in person).
  • I am so thankful for the technology we have at our disposal today and how full my Facebook feed has been with uplifting sermons, devotions, and testimonies.
  • Let us keep flooding every social media platform with the Good News!
  • Let us step up and be an example to the world!

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-2

Though we find ourselves in uncertain times, no matter what role we play, let us remember we are called to “be patient in affliction and persistent in prayer”. Also, consider that our spiritual health and growth is more important than our happiness; being “pruned” is not pleasant.

So, let us all set out to renew our minds through our pursuits of Jesus and watch our desires to learn more about our Creator grow!

A View From Home: Corona Virus

If you have the privilege to live in a modest setting, you probably have access to internet and social media, then your social media feed is over filling with the corona virus pandemic information, memes, case numbers, government action/lack of action, etc. We are living in some strange times and there are so many questions, concerns, and emotions swirling around. I don’t have medical, professional, or statistical data to contribute. The only thing I can do is share what I see from my point of view and provide encouragement to those who are kind enough to continue reading my posts.

Public View:

The Corona Virus (COVID 19) is starting to spread like wildfire in our country. National and local officials are trying to implement and encourage interventions to help slow the spread and flatten the curve. Unfortunately our arrogance and concern about public opinion overran our common sense and has now put several people in danger.  However, what’s done is done.

So, now what?

Social distancing is a very popular term right now but please learn about its importance. Learning to stay home can be hard for many people in modern society, when we are constantly on the go. I pray that people use common sense, have patience with this temporary disruption, and be considerate of your health and those around themselves.

I have sympathy for those who have to completely rearrange their lives and are scrambling to make adjustments. My hope is that people take the recommended precautions seriously.

Personal View:

Personally, the disruption has not been that significant at this point. We are “homebodies” anyway; we enjoy being home. The biggest change we have right now is that my husband is allowed to work from home, but this is not foreign to us either. He was able to do this when I was going through chemotherapy. I suppose, our past experiences with social isolation from cancer and chemotherapy has helped prepare us for the current situation.

We are doing our best to be cautious and we are avoiding all social activities outside of our home. Social distancing is important to us, specifically, because I am part of the higher risk group for “catching” the virus. I am on a medication for my metastatic cancer that suppresses my immune system. (People often forget, or overlook, people like me because we don’t look sick.)

I have listed below some Bible verses that have and continue to bring me hope and peace during times of fear.

I hope you find comfort in them as well.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”  Jeremiah 29:11-13

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”  Romans 8:28

“fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”  Isaiah 41:10

“Trust in the Lord with all your, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”  Proverbs 3:5-6

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”  Isaiah 55:8-9

And a new favorite:

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Romans 8:38

I don’t know why the corona virus is happening in this time. Maybe it brings us the opportunity to slow down and focus on what is most important or Who is most important. I don’t know how this will all play out. No one on earth does. What I do know is that God is greater than anything we have here on earth. He has everything under control, and He can see the “big picture” that we cannot see.

Spend time in the Bible each day, search your heart, and pray. There is so much power in these gifts. God has given them to us to use as tools in communicating with Him. And when it seems too much to bear please know that the Spirit is there to intercede when you can’t find the words. Take heart, “this too shall pass.”
